If you do use the newer 3 terminal genny.. then you will need the correct voltage regulator as well. It is an easy setup.. the regulator has an armature connection ( big stud out the back of the genny ) a field connection ( to the insulated stud on top of the genny- might have a phenolic washer or rubber/plastic gromet to insulate the stud.. etc ), and might have a grnd reference to the the genny casing stud ( the un-insulated one ). There will also be a batt line on the genny to charge the battery.

If you don't feel good about this, try to get the one wire job, and a new cutout relay.. the cutouts are cheap. Remember to polarice the cutout, and / or the new 3 wire genny.

I would take it back. Either that, or you'll have to wire it like an early 8N and cobble up a place to mount a Voltage Regulator. I would rater get the correct generator.
