I scraped it and then sanded it and cant read it. is there anything I can put on it to see the numbers? I think it is a 9N. It is a three speed with foot pegs ,but the numbers I think I can read say a late 8N. would muriatic acid on a sponge help bring the numbers out?

Try viewing it in daylight, at an angle. Perhaps take a childs crayon ( white? ) and rub over it well, then polist some off with a cloth.. some have reported similar luck with white out.. then wipe off, etc.

3sp with foot pegs will be indicative of a 9n/2n chassie. If you can read 8n on the engine, then you probably have a newer engine..from an 8n... they were bolt up compatible.
