I was told by someone that this is common and the casting warps. I have a 1952 8N. Could some you tell me how to fix it inexpensively? Or are there other issues?

Thanks for all responses!
Dave

Dave, my gov was leaking and I found it to be the seal for the throttle shaft. I replaced the seal and no more leaks! KB

I had a problem with a leaky governor, myself... The top bolt hole had stripped out. A helix coil fixed that.

While I had it off, though, I went ahead and sealed things up with some black RTV. Go sparingly, so you don't glom something up, but I haven't leaked a drop since...

I used two gaskets and glued them together with shellac. It stopped the leak but I have always wondered if it could affect the governer's preformance. It wouldn't seem to but,,

While you have the gov apart you may as well inspect all the innards : balls for flat spots, the race surfaces for pits and grooves and all the bushings. I had the same problem but the gov body was so warpped and the innards so worn out, it was cheaper to by a whole new gov. Sure glad I did cause old girl has never run better.

My 2 cents worth (or should I say $235.00 worth) .?

Ha Dave, There's nothing to it, put some emery cloth or 80 grit sandpaper on a very flat surface, and pass the housing over it with the bolt holes in line with the motion. You will be able to see when it's flat when the scratches cover the whole surface.Use gasket sealer on both sides of the gasket when you put it back together. It will take a while to grind it down flat,so stike with it.hth

Mine leaks too on my '52 8N. Maybe just a few drips per day; I just put a cardboard under where I park it. I'm afraid to take it apart to fix it because every time I take something apart I find something else wrong. I'm just going to wait until I can't stand it any more or the gov needs work. I wonder what kind of oil pressure the governer is under; maybe I could glop something on it to stop the leak. Bryan
