I am trying to cut my new PTO shaft so it will fit the 8n with the ORC on or off. What is the minimum amount of inches that the outer shaft can over lap the inner shaft and be safe running my sickle mower. I only have about 5" if I cut it for both ways. I do not want to make it too short for other tractors w/o the ORC. I probably do not need the ORC running a sickle mower, but do not want to take it off everytime I take the rotary cutter off to use the sickle mower.

If it were me...And it aint...

I would either remove the ORC when I used the sicklebar or better yet get a quick-disconnect ORC...Costs a little more, but is handy when you are in a situation like you describe...

And taking off and putting on the conventional ORC is only a 2 miunte job at most...Just not that big a deal...

I didn't give a label for the link so it didn't bother in that first post.

Just saw that discussed in the manual for Land Pride mowers. They say the overlap should be no less then 1/2 the length of either section of the drive line. That online manual is at the www landpride.com website. On page 13 you'll see a diagram with instructions on how to determine the placement of the cuts. There may be other manuals but that's the first one I came to.
It's a pdf so it may be slow to load. It is on my modem.
Check out how they use a loose, flexable top link with plenty of slack on their mowers.
