Mark, My carb used to leak from a screw in the bottom of the bowl also. I ended up purchasing a new carb for my 51 after 4-5 attempts to get the original carb right. The new one looks the same except that it appears to be chromate coated so it
has a yellow color that doesn't hold paint very well. With a new manifold, the tractor runs like a top now. I guess it is a good idea to turn the fuel off but I haven't for the last 18 years.

Your float aint floating or your needle and seat aint seating, take it from there ,

I suppose turning off the valve is a good way to go but it can't hurt to get the carb right.
The rebuild didn't take. Do it again. Get the float valve to work right, tight. Take a round wooden tooth pick, stich the point into the seat and spin the toothpick to clean & polish the seat. If I don't like the way it looks I'll lap it with that toothpick and some jeweler's rouge. The float needs to be set properly. You bend the float around til it just touches a 1/4" drill.
I don't like gasoline leaks at all. Best to get em fixed before they develope into a real problem you never imagined.

Mark..... ....other than the fact that the Ford Owners Manual RECOMMENDS turning the fuel valve OFF for long term storage, I would suggest that turning the fuel valve OFF is good overnite or longer practice. It can PREVENT the gravity fed gas from UP-flowing into the intake manifold and into any open intake valve and prevent HYDRAULIC LOCK when you go to crank the starter. NOT GOOD.

Besides little pieces of crud that can get caught in the carb intake needle valve, there is ALWAYS the possiblility that the float doesn't FLOAT very good. And if the float doesn't float, the needle valve doesn't get much pressure to turn the gravity fed gas OFF..... .....Dell, who STRONGLY RECOMMENDS turning the fuel tank valve OFF when tractor is not going to be used

Mine did the same thing last weekend. I had forgot to turn the fuel off. I was almost out of gas, and had the valve opened all the way. I think I started getting down to the bottom of the tank, where there was water and crude. Some of the crude must have got wedged in the needle valve, and held the float open. I put fresh gas in it, and only open the valve a few turns. I drained the bottom of the carb a couple of times, until I figured good gas was in there. I drove over a rough field a few times, and it must have kicked out the particle, because it shuts off now. I usually always turn the gas off. May have to tear it down later, but it is working for now.

Ken, If you want to get everything out of the tank, just unscrew the valve/bowl assembly from the tank and everything will run out right to the bottom. Early on I must have had water down there and everytime I used the tractor I was cleaning water out of the bowl. One day I unscrewed the whole assembly (when the fuel level was low) and drained out all kinds of crud. Ran a gallon of K-1 through it and washed out the stuff that didn't come out the with the gas. haven't taken the sediment bowl off in years now. It was real easy but I kept putting it off 'cause I was afraid of causing a big job. It turned out to be just fear of the unknown-a no problem job that really improves life with the tractor.
