I just bought an 8n as my first tractor and I am going to pick it up this weekend. I will be using it primarily for bush hogging and I was told it has a disengaging clutch to make it easier to stop when mowing. Not sure of the year, but it has a side mounted distributor. Seeing that I am new to tractors I thought I might look to some people with experience to help get me started.

What type of oil and transmission fluid are you using? SAE 20, M2C134D?

How fast should I go when bush hogging?

Does it hurt to go full throttle when on the street?

How long does a tank of fuel usually last?

Any other tips on using and maintaining an 8n?

Thanks for any information. I have tried to get a lot of these answers by using the forum search, but haven't had much luck.

Matt

No telling the last time the valves were adjusted. Check em first chance you get. Don't wanna burn em up!
Not self-adjusting like modern valves.

WOW!

Thanks for all the quick replies. I will have to make a trip to the local TSC and get the manual and tune up supplies. I am sure that will have more questions to come and it looks like this is a good place.

Thanks

Matt

Hi Matt,
Welcome to the world of N series tractors. The side mount came out in the 50's. I have an earlier front mount distributor. There's lots of links on this site to get you up to speed on your particular 8N as well as how-to manuals and videos. There's also lots of great folks willing to help you through a particular problem or issue.
One thing I believe you will come to learn is that the N series is a remarkably tough and durable piece of equipment. I doubt that many tractors made today will still be in use 50 years from now.

Something I forgot. If your machine has a proofmeter, use that as a gauge for what throttle to mow at.. there is a mark on the tach for the 540 pto rpm, and belt pulley speeds, as well as ground speeds.

Even if it came with one ( early ones didn't ), after 50 years it may be toast... look on the front right side of the engine.. the governer cover, and see if it has the nipple to accept the proofmeter drive cable... if so, the proofmeters and cables are available for order.. run about 50-65 bucks depending on where you get them.. cable varies greatly too... I've seen them up to 29 bucks!!.

Alternately, you can get one of those small digital jobs that sense off a spark plug wire... the units are cheaper.. One of us can tell ya the coresponding pto rpm.. but I'm nostalgic.. so i got the proofmeter.

Congrats on the tractor.

Lets see... if it is a side mount it is late 50 or later. The serial number is on the left side of the block kinda to the right of the oil canister, and above the starter.

You can check the number against a list here, on the left side. Also, you might want to get a I&T FO-4 manual.. get them here, or many online dealers.. or even New holland dealer,, or even TSC stores.

Most of us use a sae 30wt oil for the engine.. but there is a good amount that also use multi vis oils.. like 15/40.

The mc1-134d oil is the new NH spec for the tranny/rearend/hyds.. though some of us still use the original spec 90wt gl-1 mineral oil... get it at TSC, etc.

The clutch that you heard of is commonly called an over running coupler.. etc... it is a one way ratchet.. lets the pto power the impliment.. but when the impliment speed is higher than the tractor, it freewheels.. so you can actually use your clutch and break to stop.. otherwise that inertial power is fed back thru the pto to the final drives.. etc.

Road gear ( 4th gear )..is well.. pretty fast.. I'm guessing 14 - 16 mph at full throttle... just be carefull, and don't make sharp turns. or expect to stop on a dime... remember it is an old tractor.. no rops or seatbelt.. and marginal brakes.

I mow in 1st gear. Ther eis some discussion that 2nd gear is a weak gear, due to being used for plowing, etc... I don't know the 'real story' .. I just use 1st for mowing.. besides.. the 3-4 mph is fine.. lets the tractor cut it without grunting too much.

As for fuel.. if the tractor is in good condition.. I would guess around 8 hours.. maybee more maybee less.. depends on the specific work, etc. If you have the original fuel sediment bowl, there is usually a 1 gallon reserve that you get too by opening the fuel knob a few more turns.

Tips... well... be carefull The brakes usually arent the best... don't pull heavy loads that are attatched to anything higher than the th elow point of the rear axle .. the tractor will/could flip and kill you.

Change your oil inthe air cleaner every day, and service the old girl regularly.. remember to hit some grease in the zerks once in a while.. manual says every 10 hours.. but I imagine you can extend that a little.
Remember to put a drop of oil in the side oiler cup on the distribuitor, and the generator endplat oil cup. ( The distribuitor has a wick for the oil.. if yours hasn't been oiled, hit it with some pb bnlaster or wd40 to get it soaked.. then oil as normal. ) Change your oil every 100 hours or once a year.. get a good filter.. a phram c3 or c3p is a good number to cross to / from.. and use the new oil can gasket that comes with it.. even if your old one looks ok.

Other stuff is just basic love and care.. etc.

Also, lube your steering gears and top bearing onthe steering shaft. There may be a screw on the steerring shaft to drip some oil in for the top bearing, and on the right side, there will be a bolt that may go through the battery box, on the upper right side of the steering box... pump some 80w90 or 140 weight ger oil in there... if it leaks out the sector arms.. your bushings and seals are old.. keep an eye on it.

If you are lucky, you might have a late model with some easy adjustment for backlash on the steering sectors.. if so, you will see a slotted headed stud on either side of the steering box.. that is used to adjust play out of the steering.

Good luck.

If ya got more questions, ask away!

Matt, to answer some of your questions, and I'm sure others will offer theirs, get you a service manual from Tractor Supply, FO-4. You will need this for answers to service questions and general maintenance. I use 30wt detergent motor oil, and 90wt GL-1 mineral oil in the tranny/hyd. system on a '51 8N. You can usually get the GL-1 oil from Walmart. Others use multigrade engine oils and the M2C134D oils.
What you choose to use will usually depend on the condition of your tractor.
As far as your question on how fast to go when bush hogging, don't go any faster than you are comfortable with, I usually use 2nd gear, 3/4 throttle on areas I am familiar with and in tall grasses only. If the terrain is unknown, slow down until you are comfortable with the speed.

Depending of carb. settings and work load, the N will run 6 to 8 hrs. on a tank of gas.

Hope this helps some.
Roy

I use 10W40 oil (6 qts when you change the filter) and M2C134D hydraulic fluid (5 gallons; tractor has 3 drain plugs) Set the throttle at about 3/4's to keep the rpm's up going to the bush hog, then pick a gear based upon what you are cutting; e.g., if it's real tall grass, weeds, etc, you will probably be in first gear. I rarely use 4th gear and never use full throttle, not because the tractor can't take it, but because the brakes are not that great, as you will see. Keep it in 3rd gear, 3/4 throttle. Fast enough. Fuel consumption is a function of time/rpm's, but as a general rule, 1.3 to 1.5 gal per hour is what mine burn. As to other tips...well, most of us on this board could go on for hours! Start with buying the manuals. Then, read them!! Next, you will need a grease gun. And, spend your first day w/ the new addition by performing every single maint. function listed in the book, plus a few more, like clean all the battery terminals & connections, the fuel bowl and screens, adjust brakes & clutch pedals if needed, check points, timing, etc. Just try to overcome the desire to jump on it & go to work!

Matt, the side dist. means it is a late 1950 or has had an engine replaced. A 90 weight gear oil is good for the complete system, except the engine. Speed for hoggin' will be determined by what you can cut and not just lay it over. I can't see any harm at full throttle on the street. Depending on what you are doing(rpm's versus load) the full tank may last all day ? As for maintaining your 'N'. you may wish to buy the IT F-04 shop manual ( for sale on this site and elsewhere ). You may wish to increase your maint. as needed in accordance with how you work the old girl. Good luck and have fun. I have with mine. !!

Hi Matt,

Congratulations on your 8N. I have had a 49 model for over 26 years and have gotten my money's worth out of it time and time again due to all the work I have done with it, not to mention all the enjoyment it has given me.

I don't know how long a tank of gas will last but I once bragged to a coworker that my 8N would run all day on a gallon of gas. (I meant the comment as a figure of speech to indicate that it was good on gas.) Afterward, the coworker ragged me and made jokes about my tractor running all day on a gallon of gas. It got kind of irritation after a while.

Anyway, the 8N is pretty good on gas depending on how hard you work it. Rick H. Ga.
