Just finished helping a friend with his Jubilee. He had no spark. It appears that his problem was dirty wire connections. I removed ALL connections and cleaned them. Tractor is now running.

I just got to thinking about when I cleaned the wires going to the Generator. I didn't remove the nuts that lock the studs (I think). I just removed and cleaned the top nut and wire. Got to thinking though. I didn't notice that the field post on the generator should have been insulated from the generator case (wasn't really looking). What would happen if this insulator were missing? How would this be recognized? I guess I'm just a little nervous now, having not noticed if that was there. (Hope I didn't remove that lock nut and loose the insulator)!

If the field is grounded it won't charge the battery, I think. The field induces a current in the armature so I'm thinking there won't be any smoke or stuff melting if it's grounded, dunno.
Seems like the field is the 0 volts reference, kinda like ground anyway.
Maybe the current is going INTO the field and it will be a problem with the field wire and regulator. You only took off the one nut and didn't twist the post you're ok.
Use backup wrenches or even the tip of your needlenose so you don't move and twist that stuff. Don't move anything but the one nut. sheesh....

On my 8n, the insulating washer on the field post is either fiber or a real flat plastic... and unless you look very very close.. you can't even see it, as it barely extends past the bottom holding nut. In fact, due to this, I used a different connector on the field wire than the large 2 prong spade it came with, as there was plenty of 'connector' that could have bent down and touched the case... I used an eyelet connector instead.

If you only removed the top nut to get the wire off, then you probably are fine.
