Jubilee, 6 volt coil

I have been researching coils and voltages in the archives for the past week and a half and I think I may have gone through only 10% of what is there. Not enough time this summer (or maybe this lifetime) to read it all. I haven't found an answer yet to this question.

What should a 6-volt positive ground coil's incoming voltage be on a Jubilee? This is obviously a side mount. I see lots of info on this subject referring to FRONT mount 6-volt coils - Approx 3.5 volts points closed, battery voltage points open. I'm not sure if those numbers apply to only 6-volt FRONT mount coils, or all 6-volt coils. If applies to all 6-volt coils, I guess I should expect to find a ballast resistor on this Jubilee? I am troubleshooting a friends system with no spark. Gonna start tonight. I'm betting on dirty connections. His wiring is a mess, with five or six splices where the wires are just twisted together and taped (dirty & rusty). I will be re-doing all these connections. Curious about the voltage to coil though.

Thanks, Jim

With wires like that you might not find a problem just checking the voltage at the coil. You need to check the voltage at the coil AND the voltage at the battery and take the difference. That is the voltage drop. The voltage drop should be around 0.3v. It would be nice if it were 0 but that won't happen.
More then 0.3v and you can expect problems because those connections, connectors, switches, terminal blocks, and wiring are adding too much resistance and dropping too much voltage. That's the kind of stuff that gets worse as you run it or the temp goes up and then the thing strands you up on the North 40.

I have a 53 Jubilee. No resistor. 6 volts at coil. If all the connections appear to be good, check that little copper strip that is on the inside of the distributor and make sure it has not broken, or shorted out against the side of the distributor or points plate. You can get sparks with as low as 4.5 volts, I have been told.
