I notice that the left front has a lot more wobble to it than the right front. It's been that way since I got it. Left radius rod shows some evidence of trauma. i.e. cracked about mid shaft and the crack opens toward the tractor. Should mention that its a 9N so it has the I-beam type rods. Any guesses as to what happened would be interesting and any suggestions as to where this can be tightened up would be welcome. This may sound stupid but.. Is the radius rod supposed to be straight? I mean 100% straight without bends, without twists. Need to know before I bother my neighbor the welder.

Dan, the way the steering box is 'engineered' it is possible to have more freeplay on one side than the other. When I had mine apart, I had some spacers made up to different specs (thickness) than the Part Book offers. It was exactly what was needed to keep the segment gears spaced where they don't load excessively on the steering wheel gear and aren't too far away on either side. Result? (and maybe just good fortune) but it is now easy to turn and not too loose.

NOW, if I could just figure how to take the slack out of the original aft joints on the steering arms, it'd be good as it was in July of '46. I didn't really want to weld some Edsel or Valiant tie rod ends in there..... .

Anybody know, is there some way to "refresh" the originals without replacing the whole dang thing?????

Radius rod must be perfectly straight. Wobble may be from worn spindle bushings (sometimes called kingpin bushings), wheel bearings, or cracked rim. Any of these must be corrected righy away.
