I have recently acquired 1952 Ford 8N and I don't understand several things about it " 1. is it normal for the positive battery post to be wired to ground. 2. The engine starts and runs like a top until I engage the PTO,it then chokes down and dies.. Help,, Les

Well, I checked the pto on the 8n and it appears to be o.k. The engine now will throttle down and die with the pto disengaged.. You can immediately restart and can increase the throttle to full and it will run o.k., but when clutch is engaged and shifted into 1st. gear it will run for a few minutes and then die again.. my son acquired the tractor with a farm and we are both learning. Also I checked the carb. bowl and removed a substantial bit of gunk , however the top was clear gasoline.. Any help would be appreciated... Les

Thanks Dell. I had being using a brush hog on the 8n for about 4 hours when it just chocked down. I was cutting very high grass and don't beleive I hit a stump or anything. It would start up and run until I engaged the pto and then die. As you can tell I am new at this and appreciate all your help.. Les

Hodges..... ..I flunked reading, but with that information that you've been brushoggin' deep grass, BETTCHA yer brushog's blade all balled up with excess grass. That'll stop yer engine from turning when you try and engage the PTO that drives the brushogg..... ....Dell

Drop the PTO Shaft off the brush Hog and see if it turns OK. If it dose then check out the hog for material binding up the blade. See if the hog will turn first befor getting into the tractor for a problem. Mark H.

Hodges..... ....yes, ALL N-Tractors came from the factory with the battery (+) connected to ground.

What are you not telling us about your PTO? Is it connected to an implement like a brushogg?

You do realize that the 8N's hydraulic's is powered by the PTO and if you have a hydraulic pump problem, it could well kill your engine with the load of a BAD hydraulic pump.

But honestly, the only thing that makes sense from what information you've supplied us, is the PTO shaft has been buggered up by a brushogg without an Over Running Coupler (ORC). And the only solution is a NEW PTO shaft. And if this is the case, you will have to "cut" the PTO shaft outta the hydraulic chamber. Mostly greesy grunt work.

Recommend you get an I&T FO-4 manual ($29 cheap) before you start doing anything on the hydraulics..... ....respectfully, Dell
