i have a slight miss in my 8n i've checked the compression it's fine,I ran automatic trans fluid through the carb to remove carbon deposits, I changed plugs and wires, points , condenser and distributer, rebuilt the carb and set timing. the coil is also fine. the tractor runs very good except for the slight miss. while the tractor is running it will miss 2 or 3 quick times stop for 10 or 15 seconds miss a few more times. but there is no definate pattern to the misses. it doesn't really effect the performance of the tractor but i'm a perfectionist. if anyone has any tip please respond a.s.a.p

Micheal, My last mystery miss was due to a failing coil. It was probably the original 1952 6 volt coil. I took the opportunity to eliminate the dropping resistor in the 12 volt conversion and put a proper 12 volt coil in along with an electronic ignition to replace the points. No more miss and better overall operation.

Mike, My 8n does the same thing, the last time I tuned it up I noticed a lot of up and down slop in the distributer and thought nothing about it, however I see in the archives worn bushings will cause our problems. As soon as the weather breaks its getten fixed.

Don't overlook broken valve spring. At cranking speed the compression may check ok. At idle or under power the spring may not always close the valve tightly. Like someone said, pull valve cover and inspect closely. fwiw, ray

Aside from sticking valves, you may want to consider the possibility of distributor shaft wear, or a rubbing block cam that is not symmetrical, causing the rotor to not make even contact with the distributor cap terminals at regular intervals.

I HAVE NEVER HEARD ABOUT TRANNY FLUID THRU THE CARB. I WOULD SUGGEST DROPPING A QUART OUT OF ENGINE LUB. AND THEN ADDING A QUART OF TRANNY FLUID AND OPERATE AS NORMAL. AS FAR AS ANYTHING THRU CARB I HAVE HEARD YOU CAN USE WATER TO BREAK CARBON HOWEVER I USE A PRODUCT FROM G.M.. YES INTO A FORD TO MAKE IT RUN LIKE A CHEVY, LAUGH LAUGH. ITS CALLED TOP ENGINE CLEANER. Have you checked for a sticky valve or three. Take the tappet covers off and spray valve stems with WD-40 or other penetrant.
