Boy, is this a hard board to keep up with!? I follow several forums on various things I'm interested in, but nothing as active as this one;
you miss a day or two and it takes an hour to catch up. All good info and there is nothing wrong with some personal stuff.
Two questions of little import:
1. Do you keep your choke rods with some drag (to hold position) or free? How long do most N's need choke? Mine takes two or three minutes.
2. Any other Californians here? I'm in Mendocino county and I don't envy some of your below-zero temperature problems.

Needing to keep the choke out 2 or 3 minutes seems excessive. I only need to keep mine out until the 8N fires, then I can push it back in. You might want to check the filters at the carb elbow and at the fuel shutoff valve to make sure you are getting good gas flow.

I'm in Nevada County, CA. Only high 20's is lowest we get so far this year.

I pull choke 1", and it stays cause the rod is bent. Hit the starter switch, then no choke is needed.

What do you use your N for up in Mendocino? Grapes?

I am also in California, Sonoma to be axact. My choke will hold its position, but i never need it. Even after 2 or 3 weeks of being parked. My tractor is covered in a shed but no door on it. Good luck and good to see I am not the only Californian out here with an N.

I hold mine until it fires and then let go-1-3 secs. It runs fine then. If I am in a hurry to pull off when it is stone cold, I pull the choke part way while letting the clutch out to keep it from stalling. It pulls fine once it is moving. No need for the choke to pull off once it has been running for 60 secs or so. If the temps are above 40F I don't even touch the choke. Southern Maryland.

I as well, choke for 2-3 sec. As soon as she starts I release the choke. I have the throttle set just above idle. I let her warm up and don't try to throttle up until she idles smooth. She sits outside but covered up. Never have a problem (knock, knock, on wood)

Maybe an air leak in/on/around the carb that goes away after things heat up and expand? If that was the problem I hear that with a little care, spraying WD-40 can help pin-point the leak.

I am with Jerry and Matt here.
Pull out choke, hit starter button and release both when she fires. Maybe 2 seconds.
Cold and snowy Vermont.

I don't even use the choke in the summer...

Jim, I have the same situation as Jerry, Pull the choke out for 2-3 seconds until it starts then
it springs back and runs fine.Any longer and it would flood, and thats in Upstate NY 10-20 degrees.

My choke pops right back. After it starts, I can't choke it for more than a few seconds or it'll die.
