2n Governer Question

I purchased a 2n last year and used it for brush hogging. I did a tune up and replaced the plugs, wires, cap, roter, points, etc before mowing. I was cutting dry brome in Sept / Oct with a 5 ft hog. It seemed to handle it pretty well and only bogged in the tallest stuff. By the time I had finished mowing I had my repair list pretty complete. This winter I installed a new radiator, 12v kit, new wiring, steering box, and fixed a bunch of leaks (including the governer). When I had the governer off the balls and plate were in good shape. The shaft had a lot of end play which had been compensated for with a loop of wire. I cut this off before realizing why it was there. After seeing the situation I replaced the wire before reinstalling. Now mowing this year (the grass is nice and green and everyone around here is making their first cut) it seems that the tractor is strubbling with the mower a bit. The governer seems to be very slow to react. Only after the engine speed really drops does it react. I check the F04 and followed the instructions with no real help. I also had the carb off and cleaned it out this winter as well but I think it is alright. There is not miss, stumble etc. The one thing I changed was that when I reinstalled the governer I used two gaskets stcked up to be sure that I stopped the pesky leak there. Any ideas or suggestions on getting the governers reaction sped up will be appreciated.

Thanks Mick

Mick,
End play which way? Is it the arm that wobbles side to side, or is the spring loose?
Make sure the spring has no end play, but is also not under tension.
If it is the arm itself, you'll have to dis-assemble the governor. Remove the arms, and make some shims from sheet metal. Cut them to shape and roll around the shaft. Re-install the arms and see if it removes the play.
After you re-install the governor, DO NOT re-connect the rod to the carburetor. Adjust your carburetor to ensure it is not the problem.
Re-connect the governor. If the arms and spring are tight, you shouldn't need any adjustments. If it doesn't operate correctly, adjust by bending the flat plate that connects the rod that runs over the engine and the rod that goes down to the governor. Note-these rods must be absolutely straight-if not, replace them.
The FO-4 shows a diagram for fixing the arms with shims as I mentioned above. Try it and let us know how you make out.
