There is no place to put the wire from the distributer (?), there is just the two bolts on the back that the rear plate slide over. Is there a trick to getting this to work?

Most likely the bracket that holds it to the dash panel goes on first. It should have 2 plastic insulators on it. And the wires use the same studs as the bracket. Should have been some destructions in the package. I know, if your like Me you threw them away. LOL. Somewhere down on the case of the ammeter there is a (+) (-) that will tell you which stud is which.

Two things. You have the modern ammeter and you have to connect a wire to each of the studs that mount the ammeter. There is now 'loop.' They are insulated from the dash. That meter should be between the battery and the ignition switch. The coil should be on the other side of the ignition switch.

But he won't post it! What's up with that? The archives don't work or I would have found one for you....

I just have a wiring diagram. That may not help you.

I'm sure one of these guys has a diagram but I want to TELL you where the ammeter is because it's good to understand, without a diagram. (I'm in kind of a hurry, rain is forcast.) Anyway, your ignition switch has a wire from the battery, actually probably from a post with a big cable connected to the battery. The other side of the ignition switch goes to the ignition circuit and the charging circuit, the tractor. One side to the tractor and the other side to the battery. You put the ammeter in that wire to the battery. Then the ammeter shows you what is happening to the battery and also what is happening to the starter and the genny. Amps out Amps in. Battery powering the starter and coil = amps out. Genny charging the battery = amps in. Get your mind around that and you understand what it is telling you and you will have no problem understanding where to wire in that meter. Or any other ammeter. HTH
