Ha guys, I'm havin'a hard time finding 6V auto bulbs around here these days. I've been using a 12V 1156 taillight bulb as tester and the 6V system makes it burn as bright as a 6V bulb.Would it be a problem using it in the work lite? Me electric dummy.

Always figured that a 12V bulb working in a 6V system was a "heavy duty" bulb! Burns at half brightness and lasts twice as long! Go figure...

ahoy mate tugboat tim here. forgrt aboat all that I/e divided by watts equels ohms equel pie squared I was in the electrical field for twenty years. Lets do some mutch simpler math I own a john deere b that some idiot put a twelve volt battery in a six volt system that equels very bright but not for long so all three lights were burned out when I bought the tractor .So here in lies the true math ie Tugboat tim walks into napa auto parts and asks do you have any 6 volt lamps like these the man says why no but i can have them for you tommarrow thier 3 dollars a piece times three thats 9 bucs no all this is true the 12 volt will be dimmer but if i remember high school drivers ed one tractor length for every io miles per hour if you cn't get soped in that distance maybe lazzer surgery should be on your list. You can disregaued everything else I said but three bucs a lamp won't cut for this part time farmer part time tugboater

Try NAPA if you want the 6v buld ( or car quest.. ) If they look at you funny, mention a vw... I got a 6v blinker assemble from them.. The parts counter guys are funny.. very much limited scope thinkers...

You walk in and say I need a 6v bulb ( blinker , etc ) for my 6v tractor.. they go blank for a moment and then recite a canned speech about not haveing listings for tractor parts.... you pause for a second, ask the same question again and substitute 6v VW for 6v tractor, and they spin around and come back with a box of 6v stuff... go figure... ( happened at both the local car quest and napa here in summerfield )....

Glad to know I've got company when it comes to dealing with parts counter folks....I usually try and take the old part and say "I need one of these". Up until 4 years ago, I had a 1940 Chevy pick-up. I took the stop light switch in once and said I needed a replacement; he studied for a minute, walked to the parts bin and produced a perfect match with the comment "Oh, you have an Austin-Healey, huh?". Telling these folks you're looking for tractor parts, 6V stuff, etc is frustrating. The New Holland dealer here has two parts guys; one is 60+, the other is 30ish. Needless to say, if the old guy is not at work, they never have the part I need..... .

A couple of years ago I called the local New Holland dealership and enquired about their price for an engine rebuild kit, including cylinder sleeves, for my 49 8N. The young man in the parts department that took my call politely informed me that the 8N did not have cylinder sleeves. Since I do not like debating over the phone, I politely told him thanks and got my rebuild kit (with cylinder sleeves) from another source.

I guess parts counter people have to go through a learning curve too. Rick H. GA.

I'm not sure what I like better... a lack of info.. or disinfo.

You got disinfo.. usually when I got to my NH dealer, I get 'lack of info'.

I'll walk in to get a part that another tbn'er has just gotten at their local dealer.. so it is an available part with NH par number.. I'll ask for it.. they blink a few times, then without looking over at the book or the computer screen, they will say.. oh that is NLA... go figure.. then I go get it from DONB or someone else for less money.. but have to sit and wait for it to arrive..

I havn't figured out whether it is zaziness or stupidity.. or both. Luckilly there are enough good parts counter guys to offset this depending on where you shop.

As not to insult anyone, generally speaking, these were the kids who in school, were sneaking to the restrooms to smoke cigarettes etc...because they could not be bothered to learn. You cannot expect Harvard Graduates to take that kind of job... They quit school because they wanted to get a job so they could get a car..... Again, I said generally speaking...there are exceptions....
Happy Motoring

Hard to argue that logic. I think you hit the nail on the head.

Dallas..... ..its yer eyeballs, you only "think" 6 volts onnna 12 volt litebulb is bright. Go ahead and use your 12 volt litebulb as an electrical tester on 6 volts, won't hurt a thing..... .....Dell

Hi Dallas,

Dont know if Im qualified to answer this or not, but light bulbs are resistive loads and the lower voltage of the 6 volt system shouldnt hurt the 12 volt bulb. Worst-case scenario, it may not burn as bright as it would on 12 volts. HTH. Rick H. Ga.

My 1951 N came with two rear work lights; one was burned out. When I went to replace it, I noticed it was a 12 volt bulb, which explained to me why the other working light was so dim. I replaced them both from NAPA with 6 volt bulbs. So, in my case, the 12 volt bulb was burning dimmer. I think....if I remember my basic electricity from the 10th grade....I=E divided by R, that the 12 volt filament has a higher resistance, so 6 volts won't let it burn as bright. If your 12 volt light is burning brighter than the 6 volt light, I guess that means I can't remember the theory from 38 years ago! Anyway.....try NAPA for 6 volt bulbs.
