I have a friend down the highway who bought a well used early model 8N recently, and is running it on a 12v battery. It has not been converted. I have told him he is asking for trouble, burned out coil, and maybe the starter. What else is likely to happen to it?

I had the same thing. I bought an 8N with a 12 volt battery. The guy that owned it knew nothing about tractors. When the battery was dead he just went out and bought a new one. He hooked it up with a negative ground. I didn't know what I had. I ended up putting in a 6 volt battery and having to change the voltage regulator which was fried. It hadn't run long enough to fry the coil.

There should be no damage to the starter, however the coil and distributor internals are not gonna be happy. Besides, his 6V generator won't keep that 12V battery charged.

Are you sure that it has not been converted with a generator? There are some conversions that use a 12 volt generator that looks just like a 6 volt.

He said he doesn't think it has been converted

to find out if it has been converted start the engine and see the out put of the generator is 6 or 12 volts.
