Installing starter

I'm finally tired of hand cranking my 48 8n. I went to install the starter and could not get the bolts and bolt holes to line up. Is there a trick to installing the starter? Also there seems to be a bolt or drainplug of some sorts in the engine block on the left end of the starter. The starter keeps hitting it and I think if it wasn't there or if it was shorter I would be able to push the starter back alittle and line up the holes, any idea of what this bolt is? Any suggestions would be helpful. Ed

Previous comments are solid. I used the new clutch-type bendix. Fumbled with it for a long time before taking it to the shop and letting them spin it with their wire wheel. I drained the engine and removed the drain cock to make the installation easier without having to find the tools to grind away part of the casing at the 2 o'clock position. Line up the inside bolt, let it catch a couple of threads, then line up the outside bolt, catching a few more threads. Snug em up and your are done.

The bolts should line up. Can't imagine anything changed in 52 years. The thing to the left of the starter in the block is a cooling system drain plug. Not sure this all helps... One of my 44's drain plugs is so full of paint that I can screw it in (get it out of the way) and not lose any coolant.

If your Bendix on the starter drive is in the engaged position, that is, in toward the starter, You'll never install the starter. What you have to do is spin the bendix on a wire wheel to get it to disengage. Once it's disengaged, then you can decide whether the drain plug in the block has to be removed or not. My $ .02
