This hood looked to be in pretty good shape, until I started bringing it down to bare metal. I found LOTS of mud and lots of rot. Do you think this hood is salvageable? (Note: my body working skills are amaturish..at best). I hate to just trash it..the original Ford script is in good shape. Thanks, in advance, for all replies! -JohnJ

It'l take work.. but is not a lost cause. Look up the before and after pics of my NAA in the pic section... night and day.

My 8n wasn't real rusty, but was beat up and dented alot... I fixed the rust beat out the bad dents and filled a few more.. In the end, I got it ok, and painted it... added some character.

Thats what I would call a " border line case " I have done some amature body work that has turned out rather well, I think I would go for a new hood, but its your wallet, your time . ( what do you have the most of? ) good luck .

Some of us thrive on challenges like that one. The most encourageing words..."Nope, it can't be done". A red flag before a bull. Now, hop to it and improve your skills. We'll be waiting for pictures of your success! Of course you can do it. My 8N was as bad.

I spent many hours working and reworking a hood that wasn't as bad as yours. I had fun, and in the end it came out looking pretty good but not perfect. If that's good enough for you and you've got the time, go for it. Me, I'd buy a new one if I could.

JohnJ:

It's salvageable. I've had worse. That hood is a candidate for sandblasting though. It looks straight and that's more than half the battle.

Sandblast it, take some two-part filler and with a spatula, spread it over the rough areas, smooth it, sand it smooth and it will be fine.

It does require some time though but not like it will consume mega-hours though.

Peck away at it 15 minutes here 20 there, an hour on a Staurday and after some time you will see that it isn't that hard and readily do-able.

After sandblasting it, Zinc phosphate it after you wash it down with lacquer thinner.

It's actually my second project. First was a '68 Camaro. The floor is my new garage. The grey paint has held for over a year now..hope it continues to stick!

I just sold one for around 25.00 that had no rust, and just some cancer around the edge below the script. It was even all sandblasted clean too. The amount of time you would spend on it would be better spent on the tractor fixing it up. There are hoods out there cheap around 100.00 for pretty good ones, nice original ones 250.00 or less. I do not have a hood for sale. Mark H.

John,

If you don`t have anything else to do, and your time is`nt worth much, go ahead and fix it; buttttt I`d do like Jim. UT said cut out the FORD script {leave about 2" around it} and put them on a better hood.

As a friend of mine who restores old cars always says."Piece of cake". Sure it is fixable--good place to get practice-fix it.

With my bodywork skills, that one would go in the trash! But first I would cut out the Ford script for use in a new repop hood. The less expensive ones don't have the script. You could graft your original script patch panels into your new hood (or pay a good body man to do it). My opinion only.

WAY beyond my capabilities! As bad as that one is you might be less expensive finding a good used one or a good reproduction.
