How well do the N series tractors handle with a loader on them was power steering a available? Does a Dearborn or Wagner loader work better?

Hi Keith. I've never had a loader on the 9N since I've had it, but last week I took the front end apart to replace the pin and bushing and found that the axle had been welded big time. Apparantly someone in the past placed too much weight on the front and broke the axle at it's weekest spot, the center. I've had it for 30 years, so someone did a good job of welding. I can get a loader free, but declined because in my opinion these tractors just were not made for them. Good luck and safe tractoring. Ron

8N better than 9N or 2N for loader. I like the Davis 100, was made for the N series and NAA.
Is step thru type with front pump and hyd bucket.
I have one and works good.

Old Ns have rather weak front ends, and they steer hard even without a load in the bucket, If i remember right you can now get a power steering unit but the price is around 2 k , good luck .

The thing about loaders made for the 'N's that always bothers me is this: they put the bucket SO FAR ahead of the front axle. You know that you can carry far more weight close in than you can at arms length. Some of these loaders look to have as much distance from the front edge of the bucket to the front axle as the wheel base of the tractor. It is no wonder the rather lightly built front ends get abused.

A friend built a loader himself for his N. It is designed so that the bucket just clears the front tires when it is lowered. He still has accomodated a front 'stinger-type' pump for good loader performance. I haven't measured, but I suppose his total lift height may be less than the 'jungle gym' type. Seems worth it to me.

I wonder if the more modern loaders don't have better geometry.... Just my thoughts..... duey

The best answer I can give you is...it depends on what you expect out of it.

If you are planning to use a loader a lot for a lot of heavy work you would do well to invest in a larger, loader capable tractor. The N's were never really designed for a loader and the front axle can show the stress of a loader.

However, if you intend to use it only on occasion or only for relatively light work then the N handles a loader pretty well. I only put mine on when I need it (takes about 30 minutes). I use it 3 or 4 times a year to move some gravel or dig some dirt. I would also make sure that with a loader you have filled/weighted rear tires.

Both Dearborns (like mine) and Wagners are available used. I think Paulson makes a new loader that fits the N's and is a step through rather than the tube style.
