I have a 9N that came with a 12 volt system. I just bought a 2N that has a 6 volt system. At the rear of the 6 volt generator there is a tiny hatch (or spring loaded lid). I assume this is for oiling. If not, can someone inform me of the lids purpose. If it is for oil, Would you advise me what type of oil may be best and how much. Thanks, TJ from GA

Thanks a million and I appreciate all the responses. Its been a year or so since I have had
to ask a question, but as in the past, there is a lot of knowledge with the people who monitor the N discussion board. And Rob, your correct, I don't own an air compressor or tools..... ..... ..... yet . You did get a laugh from me though.

TJ, that is for oil alright and it likes a non-detergent 30W. Those bearings and bushings don't need or like the detergents and additives in engine oil. Your front axel is another place for some oil once in awhile. There's a hole right in the center and on top of your axel. NON-detergent 30W is great and works real well on your air tools rather than any expensive, specialty "air tool" oil too (so say Cambell-Hausfeld when you call and ask what kind of oil to use). Just a note, they say oiling air tools at the end of the day is better then doing at the beginning. But you may not even have air tools...sheesh, sorry. Buy an oil can and a quart of 30W non-detergent (cheap stuff) and use it for a lot of things.

Yep, its for oil, I squirt a few drops of 30 wgt. in there 3 or 4 times a year . Your 12 volt alt. is a sealed unit .

I usually put a couple drops of 30W in there 2-3 times a year, normally when I change the tractor oil.

I have rebuilt many generators, motors etc and all bushings need replacment due to lack of oil. Ford recomends every 200 hrs, if the oil caps are damaged I replace them, they are available from Enco.
