2 Questions for '53 Jubilee

I've just come off a weekend where I've worked my '53 Jubilee for the first time - it's actually the first time I've spent any significant time on a tractor. Anyway, there are 2 questions that result from my experience:

1. When in 1st gear (low) - and going down hill - the tractor made a grinding sound. That was the only time it made a grinding sound. Is that normal?

2. When I raised the blade to drive, the tractor seemed to 'jump' every two seconds or so. When the blade was lowered - there was no 'jumping'.

Any ideas on those 2 questions would be very much appreciated!!! Thanks,
Tom

I think I would drain the fluid out of the trans and see if there is metal in it in any significant amount. The fluid change wouldn't hurt anyway unless you just did it.

Same with the hydraulic fluid. See if it's milky (water in it) or has other contaminates.

If the tractor will jump when it is standing still with an implement on it the cause is what we call "Hiccuping". The lift has a leak internally and it is correcting the height automatically at intervals after the lift has leaked down a bit it jerkes it back up to where it is set.

Should not grind in gear no matter what. May be a bad transmission bearing or a bad gear. If it gets bad enough you will be able to determine the cause. I would run it till it is evident what the problem is. You might take it down and never find what the problem is if it is intermittant and takes that certain circumstance to make it happen.

Zane's suggestions parallel my immediate thoughts when I read your question. I suspect Zane is right on target. But I did not know whether to suggest immediate expensive fix for transmission noise. I like Zane's advice to run it until it becomes a greater, more obvious problem. However, if you have the bucks and a really knowledgeable Ford transmission mechanic, you could attack the both problems right now. Does MU have anything to do with U. of Mo? Mike-Iowa

Tom, I don't get any grinding noise from mine. I would say that it is not normal.

As far as the tractor 'jumping' it might be you are running a bit too lean. Try turning the carb main jet adjustment clockwise 1/8 turn to smooth it out. You might try that a couple times. Just keep track of how many 1/8th turns you made and if it doesn't smooth out you can put it back and try something else.
Make sure your air cleaner is clear and clean.
