'47 8N Clutch Pedal Sticking

The other day I was spreading and leveling the gravel drive with my '47 8N and after running for a half hour or so the clutch pedal started sticking when I would release it and then suddenly pop up causing the tractor to lurch forward or backward. I checked, cleaned and lubed all the external linkage and the problem seems to be internal. Anyone have any ideas? Suggestions? Experiences like this?

Thanks in advance for your advice.

About the only thing I can think of that would cause the clutch pedal to stick would be if the throw out bearing collar was somehow needing lubrication. This would be a rare bird for sure since the N is notorious for leaking at the rear main or the front of the transmission at the input shaft seal and one of these leaks usually keeps the shaft lubricated.

You could try taking off the starter and trying to direct some oil onto the input shaft housing where the throw out bearing slides in and out.

Another thing that everybody should not do is to park a tractor in the same building as animal manure is located. To store any type of equipment in the same building where animal manure is present is asking for trouble. Amonia is very corrosive and animal manure manufactures amonia and it moves around in the air and loves to attach itself to iron.

Do you have any fluid coming out of the weep hole under the input shaft? If so, you may have a build up of oil on the surface of the flywheel and clutch causing it to stick. If not, then you might be looking at splitting the tractor and checking the throwout bearing and the clutch for wear (while your in there I would replace both).

I had the same trouble with my 8N and I cured it by opening the timing mark hole cover and spraying three cans of electrical cleaner (fast drying) into the clutch assembly. The residue runs out the bottom weep hole. I know that this is probably a temporary fix, but it was easier than splitting the tractor to do it right. I did this on a Moto Guzzi motor cycle and it was ten years before it began to act up again.
