Lift goes up half-way and sometimes not at all and sometimes all the way

The rear differential was drained and replaced with new oil. But even before I put new oil in the lift would only go up halfway sometimes, and sometimes all the way and sometimes not at all. It's still doing it. What do I narrow this problem down to?

It may be that the cam follower pin is worn out in the lift. This condition can cause the symptoms you describe.

while the lift is up all the way (when it does go up) it has a tendency to have a slight jerking motion like it is correcting itself and wanting to stay up.

With a 300 pound blade on the back it leaks down to the ground in about 90 minute. It leaks down at the same slow speed. It doesn't leak down faster as it nears the ground.

So if I have to remove the rear lift what else should I do to it to fix it to last awhile?

I don't want to hassle with it later so do you recommend new rings and seals too? and get a complete lift rebuild kit?

To my knowledge there is no such thing as a complete lift repair kit. You can buy after market gasket and O ring kits for the lift cover and/or the hydraulic pump. They usually don't come together. Other parts for the lift are just about non exsistant except for used parts. Sometimes Ford New Holland can get a particular lift part but more than likely the parts man has never seen or heard of most of the lift parts and lots of them are no longer made anyway if he did recognize them.

Luckily the lift parts are very well made and of the very best materials available at the time they were made. Wish somebody would try doing that nowadays to manufactured products.

Search this web site for the gasket and O ring sets.

Yes I would replace any gasket and or O ring that you encounter while doing repair.

You didn't state the tractor type... I'll assume it's an 8N or 9N. Remove the inspection plate on the right side of the rear and look in with a flashlight while the tractor is running and the PTO is engaged. A lot of turbulence in the oil at the bottom of the pump? Relief valve needs replacement. A lot of oil cascading from the top of the pump? Rings or other problems in the ram cylinder. None of the above? Then check the touch control for a worn-out friction disk. Let me know.

Kind Regards,

Since you mention 'diff oil' I'll assume you are refering to a 9/2/8n common sump hyds.

This is a wag... but possibly a stuck valve.. or trash in the valve. When you drained the oil.. was there alot of sludge in there? picup point is low...
Hopefully you'll get other reply's than mine.. as it is just a guess. I've not had to have my Hyd's apart -yet-.
