New to N tractors. I have posted several questions and received some good information. Want to thank everyone who has helped. Have another question. I have heard about some kind of resistor that can be added to the electrical system to allow a 12 volt battery to be used without damaging the rest of the 6 volt electrical system. Can this be purchased at an Auto Parts store? What type of resistor do I ask for?
Thanks for any help
Mike

Mike: you can get a 12/6 volt resistor from Napa about 7 bucks. It works on mine fine. Mount it between the switch and the coil.If you have the old model 3 brush generator with the adjustment screw on the back it will keep your 12v batt. charged. You will need to change out your lightbulbs though and you are ready to go. Good Luck...R.M. In AL.

you can use your 6V coil in a 12V system with the proper resistor, but that's about all. No lights, and the generator will NOT do the job, unless you have a wave wound armature, 12V field coils, and a 12V VREG/cutout
good luck

I don't think a 6 volt generator would do a very good job of charging a 12 volt battery. Sure you could put a drop down resistor between the battery and the coil. I don't know the type of resistor, but I am confident that you could find the size of resistor in the archives. Probably sell them at radio shack. Better buy at least 3 of them. The life expectancy of 6 volt headlights running off of 12 volts can be measured in seconds.
