After studying the FO-4 manual it says to spread the forks to disconnect it from the control valve before dropping the pump. Now for the dumb question, how do you spread the forks? Pulling on one side at a time does nothing as it just moves from side to side. Plus it seams very rigid, almost like it would take considerable effort to spread the forks. How do you guys do it?

Plus any tips on cleaning the 1+ of sludge from the pump?

Thanks
Jerry

Jerry,

Take the inspection cover off and either use a screw driver to pop one side off or wrap a rag around the lower section of the arm and pull it loose. Once you get one side off the other is easy. On re-assembly do the reverse.

I used a floor jack under the pump to catch it when it lets loose. It's heavier than you think.

I used a brush and kerosene to clean out the pump area. Slow going, but worth it all the way. Lots of guys using pump sprayers and stuff like that. I found metal particles in mine. Rear bearings were shot and the shavings accumulated in the lower areas. Got to get all that stuff out.

Take your time. If you see something that you THINK is bad, it probably is and it's easier to replace it while you've got it down now rather than have to go back later.

Good luck

Jerry,
I did as David mentioned and used a big screwdriver. I pushed on one side until it came of, and it easily came off the other side. To re-install, I held the yoke in place while I used the screwdriver to push out one side and attach it. Much easier with a second fellow if you can get help.
P.S. Some of us put 5 gallons of diesel in the tranny and run it for a while. Diesel has some lubrication properties, and it will help loosen the sludge and drain it. People offer various times for operating it this way. At least make sure it is warm.

If you take off both inspection plates and then kneel down on one side of the tractor, facing the rear, you can reach over the tractor and through one inspection hole with one hand, and through the other hole with the other hand, and pull the forks apart. It takes about a 10 pound pull.

Alternatively, use a big screwdriver or needle nose pliers through the drain hole to hold one side of the fork while you pull on the other.

Just dropping the pump removes quite a bit of the sludge. One way to go after the rest is to buy a cheap pump-up garden sprayer and fill it with fuel oil or other solvent. Spray it around in there and wash the crud out. Be careful about fire.
