12Volt coil on a 6Volt system...

I was working on my Jubilee today. Putting it back together after a split to fix Sherman tranny seal. Replacing/fixing several things as I go. Coil was loose in the holder, so I removed it to turn mounting bracket around. Stamped on the side of coil is "12V".
This is on a 6 volt system and it runs fine.
Is there any reason to change this back to a 6 volt coil?
By the way, this tractor was set up 6 Volt negative ground when I bought it. Another thing I am fixing is going back to positive ground.
Thanks, EDDIE8N

Eddie..... ..Ford/New Holland is now selling a 1-size fitts all roundcan ignition coil labeled 12 volts. But what they don't tell you is the coil is really a 8 volt coil with high output sparkies and is designed to be used in 12 volt tractors that already had a 12 to 8 volt converting resistor by-pass scheme for eazier starting.

Bottom line, 6 volts on an 8 volt high output coil is gonna give you enuff regular sparkies that you won't know the difference on a good 6 volt engine.

If it bothers you, you could consider a real 6 volt coil from Volkswaggon. Infact they even have a real 6 volt high output "hot-rod" coil called a "Blue Coil" made by Bosch for 6 volts. You're on your own to fit it.

All it takes to change from negative to positive ground is re-wiring the battery and then re-polarizing the genny.

ALSO make certain the polarity of your ignition coil matches your battery polarity. You can loose upto 30% of your sparkies with incorrect polarity. General rule for sparkie coil polarity is (+) to (+). That means the coil (+) is connected to battery (+) thru the ignition points which are at "positive ground". 6 or 12 volts, same rule..... ...Dell

Dell,
12 volt/8 volt Ford coil would explain why it also says "use with external resistor".
Thanks for the info.
Also, your getting a little slow at your mind-readin'--- I read your post from the previous day about which side of coil goes to distributor in 6V positive. Matter of fact ,I was out in the garage hooking it up about the same time you were posting! (grin)
THANKS,
EDDIE8N

Running a 12 volt coil on a 6 volt system is OK But don't run a 6 volt coil on a 12 volt system because it will overheat the coil.
