I have an addition I want to make to my 8N. I need a 2 1/2 thick x 6" x6" piece of 1018 or 1020 steel. Or, I could use two 1 1/4" x 6" x 6" thick pieces and weld them together to make one. I can't find a source. How much per pound should 1018 cost? One or the other should weigh about 26#. Any steel salesmen out there who could answer? Thanks.

I used to go to an old welding shop years ago that had an old guy who'd do anything for you, or sell anything to you. Just a thought.

Cold rolled steel (CRS) is preferred over hot rolled steel (HRS) as it tends to be a bit more flat and be more within tolerances, especially for thickness.

The absolute strength of HRS is slightly higher than CRS. For your application that shouldn't be a concern.

Steel weighs 0.283 pounds per cubic inch, if memory serves.

Steel costs about 30 cents a lb but you will be paying for the cutting to size and for a small piece like you want it will depend on what they have to start from.

I thought that McMaster Carr sold small pcs of steel. You could do a search on line for them, and search thier catalog.

Does it definately need to be cold rolled? Around
here you can usually find various thicknesses of
boiler plate in salvage yards. I recently had a piece cut to my requirements from a 1 1/2 thick
plate. Price was right.
