I picked up a 272 JD mower today.
Needs just a little welding and a seal in the gearbox. It's has 3 blades and is 6' wide.
I thought it was a belly mower that was converted into a 3pt. But I emailed a guy on ebay that has a manual for one and he said they where factory 3 pt. How do you think the N will handle it? I guess the blades being on a belt will act as a slip clutch. But will handle tall grass? Not really the Bush Hog I was wanting. But for $25 I figured I couldn't go wrong. If it won't do every thing I want it to do it should at least get me by to I find a good deal on something better. Would this be what you refer to as a finishing mower?

I use one every weekend in the summer with my '54 NAA to cut 2.5 acres of grass - it handles it fine. It is considered a Finishing Mower. Some hints for use:
1: Get an Overriding Coupler so that it doesn't run you into trees, etc.
2: If you have to stop at the bottom of an incline that needs to be mowed, allow some room to get the mower blades turning before hitting the incline - can bog down the tractor if trying to start off the blades and hit the hill at the same time.
3: Second gear is the fastest that you'll want to go to get a good cut, but make sure that there aren't any stumps, etc. that would cause a violent stopping of the mower in second - this gear is the achilles heel of the Ns and shatters freely when traumatized.
4: Not real good for tall stuff - take several passes either half width or at decreasing height.

$25 is a steal - I paid about $500 for mine 2 years ago, but it was in working condition ... I thought THAT was a deal.

Yup, its a finishing mower. Your tractor should turn it just fine. If you get in the tall stuff just raise it up a bit, or take narrower bites.

It won't cut woody brush like a bushhog, but for grass and weeds you should be fine. You got a great deal on it!
