Well the time has finally come to put the two 8Ns and the Golden Jubilee into semi-retirement. With the purchase of the new tractor I will have time to restore them and put them to work in parades and going to the mailbox to pickup the mail. My intention is to put them back to original condition and let them take a well-deserved rest. They have served me well over the last 15 years mowing, raking and square baling. But square bales are just too labor intensive. It’s like the old saying about cutting wood. “It warms you twice” once when you cut and split it and then again when you burn it. Square bales will warm you several times once when you pickup the bales and stack them on the trailer, again when you unload the trailer and stack them in the barn, one more time when you unload them from the barn and put them back on the truck to feed and lastly when you take them off of the truck to feed the cattle. Last year I used a friends round baler to see if I liked it. Well let me tell you, if I never bale or throw another square bale again in life it will be too soon. Even the wife said “no more square bales for this girl”. Unfortunately like me the N’s and the Jubilee were starting to show their age. They just didn’t have the horsepower to run the round bail and rotary mowing equipment. So I decided to give them a well-deserved rest. I purchased a new Mahindra 6000, 60HP, 4WD, Front End Loader, Power Steering and Shuttle Shift Transmission. After doing a lot of research on the subject, I convinced myself that it was the biggest bang for the buck. It is a good size tractor. In fact the 8N sort of looks like one of the kids pedal tractors beside it. So far everyone that has driven it has raved about how well and effortlessly it performs. Even my mother-in-law has volunteered to help in the haying process. I also got a new Vermeer 5400 Rebel Round Baler in the package. I can hardly wait for the hay to get up to cutting height. These will now be the workers for the farm and the Jubilee and 8N’s will be the toys. Now during the winter or bad weather I will have something to do restoring them.

Wow... I'm surprised you could pull a bailer with an N.... What type / size bailer were you using.. and was it with the NAA? How did it do? I'll guess the other 8n's were cutting and raking right?

The baler is a Ford 532; I pulled it with the jubilee but the guy I purchased it from, pulled it with an 8N. It was a little much for the 8N but the jubilee would pull it. I didn’t bale fast but I did bale with the Jubilee. Mostly I would use the Jubilee to cut and bail and I would use the 8N’s to rake. I used a New Holland haybine to cut and condition the hay. The Jubilee would pull it good in second gear.

Ed,
If you like the simplicity of operation that you have with the Ford N’s and NAA’s and you need more weight and horsepower, I think you would like the Mahindra. It is built in India and they have distribution centers for parts etc in Texas and Georgia. Filters are inexpensive and virtually any repair part can be sent over night to the dealer. They are the second largest tractor manufacturer in the world. The one I bought was around $21,000.00 with 60 HP, Front End Loader and Loader Bale Spear, Shuttle Shift and two-speed transmission that gives you 8 FWD and reverse gears to chose from. Did I mention Three-year bumper-to-bumper warrantee. Check them out at the following www.mahindrausa.com
