The one wire alternator has a special voltage regulator and rectifier so that the excite circuit is built into the alternator and no other exterior wiring is needed except the hot wire from the battery. The special regulator allows the alternaotor to use the residual magnetism in the iron of the rotor to start the excitation of the field windings and then the internal voltage regulator take over.

These alternators must be accelerated to a high RPM to begin charging or there can be a push button switch added to the field connection of the alternator to start the excitation of the fields.

They work good. I have several on equipment and tractors I operate and own.
