I am beginning to think I bought a tractor with a 6v system instead of a 12v conversion as stated. 12v battery but still has generator and voltage regulator. The old 12v battery never was any good, so I jump-started it the few times I drove it when I first bought it over a year ago. It has been sitting my barn since then, awaiting repairs and new paint. The other day, I replaced the battery, but keep frying the coils. One oldtimer looked at and said that's a 6v system. Do all 12v conversions have an alternator and no generator or voltage reg.?

Do you have an ohmmeter to measure the field winding resistance? (from the field terminal to the Big output terminal) typical ford resistance is 6-7 ohms. Most voltmeters don't work real good in this range, but typical 6V 8Ns field coils are around 3 ohms, and the old one-wire 9N & 2N generator is uaually 1 ohm. The field wire on the one-wire units does not get the full 6V from the adjustable third brush. Worse comes to worse, take it to a local rebuilder and have them look at it. it's worth a few bucks to have it right. If nothing else email me. I have built a few stealth generators here and there, and currently have one field testing down south on side mount. (Honest Dell, no pun intended)
Good Luck

Steve..... .....most 12 volt conversions use the aluminum framed Delco 10-SI 12 volt alternator with built in voltage regulator, because it works and is cheap. And it must be "negative grounded", its the alternator solid state gutts requirement.

There are some "stealth" 12 volt conversions that use 12 volt generators from Ford Falcons (for example) with squarecan voltage regulator. Could be eather positive or negative ground, just as long as they are correctly polarized.

There are some shadeytree mechanics that will put in a 12 volt battery and sell to the un-eduicated as 12 volt tractor. And all you get is a discharged 12 volt battery being charged by a 6 volt generator.

You put in a new 12 volt battery that is fully charged without the correct 12 to 6 volt converting resistor, ya gonna burnout your 6 volt coil.

Since I flunked mind reading (just ask my ex-wife of 32yrs), I can't even guess what your tractor electical system is suppost to be from your description..... ...Dell
