Jubilee Hydraulic Pump Rebuild

I'm rebuilding the piston type hydraulic pump on a 1953 Jubilee. I got a kit from Farm and Country supply and I've got some questions.

1. Should I use gasket cement when I reassemble?

2. Is the main drive gear a press fit on the drive shaft? If it is a press fit ( I don't own a press) does anyone know a trick to separate them without a press.

3.The main body of the pump is two sections that also look like a press fit. How can I separate them?

4. My kit came with 4 sets of springs. 2 sets for the ballbearings,1 set for the pistons, and a fourth set that is slightly smaller than the piston springs. Were these springs included in the rebuild kit just so that the kit would work for a different make of pump?

I'd really appreciate any help and advice I can get.

I think you have a universal kit with the springs for two different piston pumps included in the kit.

The seal and the needle bearing need to be replaced on the pump shaft while in there. The seal is not accessable unless the tapered roller bearing race is removed fromt he drive end of the pump housing which also houses the seal

Carefully inspect the area of the shaft where the side thrust needle bearing makes contact on one side of the shaft. If there is a wear pattern here of as much as .010 the new seal will not make contact with the shaft because the shaft will be pushed to one side and allow air to enter the pump. The pump will not pump any air.

If you were not having trouble with the pump loosing it's prime before you started the rebuild then the shaft is probably OK.

If the kit includes the roll pins that act as stops for the ball valves do not attempt to replace them unless one or more of them are badly damaged or missing. This is sometimes a major undertaking because these roll pins are into a blind hole and you will have one heck of a time removing the old ones. If the old ones look good leave them alone!

Do not use any gasket glue but do replace both of the gaskets on the pressure or front end of the pump. Their will be a cross point screw in the middle of the valve plate in the head of the pump and you should remove the screw and plate to replace the gasket under the plate. Be absolutely sure to remove all traces of the old gaskets. To fail to remove all the old gasket will mean doing it all over again plus removing all traces of the old gaskets. Been there and done that!

Hi Gene; you shouldn,t need gasket cement, gaskets make seal.Clean well. The drive gear is held on by a nut& key holding gear from spinning.Remove the proofmeter drive and you can get the nut through there.Just tap the gear off with a hammer& a piece of wood or brass. You must replace the seal that is just behind that gear in the housing, very important. The two sections should come apart when you remove the bolts take notice as springs and roller balls are right there Take notice there is two different sizes. You can get a IT manual from Farm&Country That will help you greatly. Good Luck Steve
