I have a "disconnect" in my wiring. Tractor runs fine, then stops suddenly with loss of all elecrics (no lights, starter, etc.) Pretty sure there is a short near the ingnition switch, maybe even the switch itself. I need a quick fix to get my drive plowed (still snowing. . .). Any ideas or suggustions beyond my description to get me going aqain would greatly be appreciated!!!

Techinically, you do not have a short, you have and "Open" First, I would suspect the battery terminals and their connetions to the cables. Are they (As Dell would say) clean, bright and tight? Then I would go to the starter relay where the battery cable connects to as well as the wire going to the dash. Are these connections up to snuff? Since the tractor will not turn over, one of the aforementioned connections is probably at fault.

Yup.

I did it again.
I missed the part about the starter not working either.

Claus is of course correct!

You have an 'open' somewhere in the main connections.

Thanks Claus... I replaced all battery cables first, they needed it anyway, but that was not the problem. My primary suspicion is the wire(s) to the dash. Could a bad anmeter or anmeter wire cause an "open"?

Does the engine turn over when you press the starter button? If not, then ground the terminal on the back of the starter relay. Does it turn over now? If not You either have a bad starter, battery or cable connections. Don't forget the plus battery cable going to the chassis....
Happy Motoring. Take a pair of water pump pliers and touch both sides of the starter relay electrical contacs with the handle. Does it turn over now?

If you have your lights wired through your key switch, rewire them to a toggle and get them out of the loop as it were.
I suspect their draw is adding to the load on an already marginal switch and causing it to heat up and lose continuity.
Next time it dies, jumper around the switch and see if that gets you going.
If so, replace the switch.

Take a jump wire strait from the battery to the coil, leave in place to run, pull off to shut down.. pos+ side for 12V. neg- side for 6V. If you dont have power to starter, put in nuetral and jump across selenoid top post to small terminal just do this till it starts.

Thanks "tlak"...I have a 12V, so will use positive. Your suggustion should give me time to clear the drive. Will this put power to my starter? Could a bad anmeter be causing the break in my electrical circuit?

No this is just power for you ign system. the other part about jumping your selenoid will power you starter or push/pull start.

Might have answered to quick. If you juice the coil then it should feed back to your buzz bar which should light up the side you need for the starter. Might hook it up then try the starter.
