Installing Oil Pump Bushing ?

Hi Folks:
Checked the archives on this question but did not find any definitive info. So here goes - I am looking for some info on how to "size the bushing on my oil pump"? I am in the process of doing some work on my 48 8N and plan to rebuild my oil pump. My I&T manual indicates that the the bushing must be "sized to the drive shaft after it is installed in the housing". I believe it needs to be but unfortunately the I&T does not tell me how to do it. My guess is that it needs to be reamed out. Does anyone have the correct diameter specs and or process used? I would appreciate any info / advice you may have. Thanks in advance!

From new your 48 8N would have had the small oil pump and if your drive gear and shaft wobbled in the housing do not bother putting a bushing in because the gear inside rubbed away the housing and made too much clearance and the oil preesure will not be good when hot, I would recommend a new housing, if yours was updated to the large oil pump it has enough capacity to withstand some clearance to just replace the bushing.

The bushing has to be reamed for a couple of reasons. One is that when a new one is installed it can be distorted and this has to be reamed to fit. Another reaon is that the pump shaft wears and if the bushing was ready made to one size the old shaft would wobble around in the hole of the new bushing.

Even manufacturers used to try to help you repair things without having to buy everything new to do it. Ford knew you were going to try to use the old shaft if possible. There are just so many bales of cotton you can produce in a year with an N tractor and you had to save every penny you could.

We had the Ford manufactured jig and reamer for the N oil pump at the dealership and I have reamed many bushing with that thing. Did a good job too.

If the shaft was really bad though I still had to replace a few.

Here's where I lose all credibility. I had the same problem when I did mine.
First I miked the O P shaft and if I recall correctly it was .559, not the original .5625 (9/16) that it was in 1952. I scratched around in the drill box and found a decent 9/16ths drill. The back end of a drill
is always .002 smaller than the tip, or in this case .560. With my air grinder, I worked up two cutting edges om the back of the drill where the nominal size met the 1/2" shank. I put the drill into my reversable Milwaukee Holeshooter with the shank through the bearing and little by little pulled it through,running in reverse. The world's first double ended drill bit. The results were a perfect hole. I got lucky I guess. Rich

Your Ford tractor dealer has a little jig with a reamer attached to ream the new bushing out. My local dealer loans it to me when I buy the kit. I borrow his vice while I am there and in five minutes I'm on my way.

There is a tool available to do it($90). A machine shop could do it too. Bushing to shaft clearance is to be .0005"-.0015"
