If you used the wrong kind of "marker lamp", you are now experiencing the negative consequences. The lamp glows angrily at you whilst it supplies a modicum of field current, yet not enough to get the alternator to "kick on" and charge. You can wind the tractor to 2200 RPM and it still won't charge.

Besides Dell's excellent advice about "check out the alternator", you might consider the following test:

1) Start the tractor 2) Bring RPM up to 1200 or so 3) Use a short piece of 12 guage wire to momentarily jumper across the idiot light 4) Alternatively, jumper from the "bat" terminal on the alternator to the P1 post. Don't get your hand caught in the fan belt.

The idiot light will go out if you successfully make this connection. If the only problem is an inappropriate lamp, the alternator should start to charge, you should hear the engine "loaded down" by the alternator, and the idiot light should stay out (and the alternator continue to charge) when you remove the jumper.

Or just get a diode. They are tiny (size of an asprin) and inexpensive (<$1). They are easy to mount - soldier in line and cover with heat shrink tubing. It is directioinal and goes in a wire between the switched side of the key switch and the #1 terminal on the alt.just like the idiot light.

David..... ....wannna guess why they call that lit marker lite an "idiot lite"?

Its lit because your alternator is NOT CHARGING. But you knew that all ready, didn't you?

First thing I'd do is take the alternator in to an autoparts place for a "free" checkout..... ...Dell
