I posted previously that my 8N just died.....like you turned the key off.

I followed the wisdom of the board....and...sure enough...it was the coil.....

BUT....why would a coil "all of a sudden" go bad?

At $30 per pop..... I wouldn't want this to be a re-occurring event?

Thanks in advance as always?

Terry Alexander

"Bundy" had it right if it was a front mount distributor. If it was a side mount distributor there is no resistor, if it is the original 6v system. If it is a converted 12v system all bets are off and there are resistors in that system. All parts fail at some point in time. Dave OH

Hi Terry. I don't remember if you have a 6 or 12 volt system, but if you have 6 volts, the resister may be bad allowing too many vots through to the coil. I believe it should check out at about 3.5 to 4 volts, but others will know better on this. In any event, electrical equipment can go out at any time, thats why, when you purchased the new coil you may have seen a sign or were told no refunds or exchanges on electrical equipment. Glad you found the problem. Happy N'g. Good luck in the future. Ron

I had a new coil,it would work then not work, turns out a wire broke near the dash inside the covering that would let the power thru some times to the coil , sometimes not, took me all day to find it,

I replaced 3 coils that did that, then I found out that the only thing wrong was the little spring on the bottom wasn't making good contact. Just stretched it a little and now I have 3 good coils.
