I finally got the oil plug out this summer and changed the oil for the first time in many years. I put in 30 weight. A few days after I changed the oil, the engine began making a deep knocking noise. It used to knock slightly before this, mostly when it was hot, but not like this. Even in 20 degree weather, with 30 weight and 20-30 pounds of oil pressure, the engine starts to knock after 10 minutes of running. It knocks at all engine speeds, with or without load, but it is not a contunuous knock; it knocks in "cycles". I always take great care of my tractors and I am wondering if I am doing any harm by running it this way. I need it for plowing snow(a lot of it in southwest MI with the lake effect this year). What could be causing this?
Thank you very much.
Erik

If it's not the trans as indicated in the other response, and if it is not the governor flyballs making the noise, or a tappet, sounds like a bad bearing to me, or possibly a wristpin bushing. And I think the oil change probably washed out some of the gunk which ways masking the problem by taking up some clearance in the bearing spaces. However, usually bad rod bearings also cause low oil pressure, but that's not indicated in your case, which means you really have to try to isolate the knock. I would not continue to operate it until I found out what the problem is an fix it. If it doesn't blow oil, and other wise the compression is good, I have read of cases on this Board where N owners have changed just the rod bearings to correct a low oil pressure or knock problem. If you don't find the problem and if it is a rod bearing, you will most likely foul up the crank journal after awhile.

Does it knock when the clutch is depressed? Mine started knocking in "cycles" this summer....turned out to be the transmision thrust bearings.....

Just an idea....let us know
Steve
