After tearing into my 8n, the engine is out in the machine shop for repair I noticed that the front axel support moves freely in any direction. That is it moves freely back and forward as well as articulating the axel. I don't what kind of play you'd expect but I'm wondering if I need to replace the bushing/pin.

What Dell said. And while you're at it might as well rebush the spindles. Oh, the wheel bearings are cheap too! Got the tie rods separated already right? How's the compression ;-)

If your going in that far its a great time to repair the radiator, rebuild the distributor and chek out the water pump as well.. ((HAVE FUN))

If the radius rods are disconnected, as seems likely in your case, the axle will move freely fore-and-aft on the kingpin, as well as rotating around it. It is supposed to work this way.

As Dan mentioned, the excess movement that you can correct with a new bushing/kingpin is any movement perpendicular to the long axis of the kingpin (i.e. up/down or side-to-side).

It is important that the axle movement be restrained on a front mount distributor N to prevent breakage of the distributor cap. Rearward movement of the axle is maintained both with spacing washers to the rear of the axle on the main pin and the radius rods. If the pin is worn you will notice an obvious worn place that has been working with the axle bushing. I have never seen one in a tractor that was used that was not worn. Axle bushings are around $5. and the pin about four times that amount.

When new there will be no vertical (radial) play in the fit between the pin and the bushing.

Dan
