...Hello...Live in Virginia...Just got an 8N last summer and have been having good time with it...pretty good shape and I have enjoyed mostly just cleaning etc!!!....couple of questions for anyone who would like to give me some advise...Wouldn't start last summer one time....click but not starter...was told at local tracor place, to move the fan blade just alittle whick wouls move the ring gear...I had already removed the starter and could see that some of the teeth on the ring gear were wore and chipped...I put starter back on and started right up!!!...No problem until just other day, when same thing happened....tried to move the fan, but it just slid on the belt and did not turn the engine to move the gear....removed the starter and sure enought saw worn teeth again...while the starter was off I took in to have rebuilt...I moved the ring gear about an inch and will see if all goes well when I get the starter back form the shop....OK...Finally I get to my question...what is the best way to move this ring gear when this happens again without taking the starter off????

Put the tractor in 4th gear and rock the tractor BACKWARD. You should be able to hear it come loose or, at least, see the fan move. If it's really locked, you may have to losen the bolts on the starter a bit (just a BIT) and do it again. DON'T TRY TO PULL THE TRACTOR WHEN THE STARTER IS LOCKED. IT WILL ONLY SLIDE THE WHEELS, TEAR THE FACING OFF YOUR CLUTCH OR BEND THE STARTER SHAFT OR ALL OF THE ABOVE. fORD HAD THIS TROUBLE from the 32 v8 on up to ?

If your 8N has a front mount distributor, it will have a hole in the flywheel cover for setting the timing with a light. You can move the flywheel with a screwdriver through this hole. With the tractor out of gear, of course.

Chuck..... ..while you can't start your tractor while it is in gear, all you need to do is put tractor in gear and push on big ol'rear tires just a coupple of inches. That will rotate your engine past the damaged starter ring gear. You know of course, eventually you're gonnna haffta split yer tractor and replace the flywheel ring gear..... ....Dell
