I am about to purchase a 1939 9N Ser # 5106
Did all of the 39's come with an aluminum grille?
It has aluminum trans cover with the dipstick in it, Is this correct? gas filler cover is the snap in type, did they also have some kind of battery cover? All of the rest of the tractor seems correct right down to the smooth rear hubs. Any help will be appreciated..Thanks Lee

You are real fortunate to find a good 39. If you are planning on restoration, then get some books. Check out the book store that is found on the left side column of this site. Randy Leffingwell - Ford Farm Tractors, Petersen & Beemer - Ford N Originality guide. If you are going to do a lot of work then get an I&T FO-4 manual.

1939 did not have a dipstick on the top transmission cover, rather an inspection plug on the side. Being #5,000 then it probably had a steel hood with aluminum grill. The steering column and the dash were all one piece with a battery shelf cast into the back, these were prone to breakage and could be replaced with the later steel version. Fenders will have two creases instead of one. Steering wheel is four spoke, not three.

If you want more specific info e mail me, I can send you some more things that I have found.

I did not pinpoint the serial# start yet but after a couple thousand tractors they did have the dipstick beside the gear lever, close to the same time the patent plate was added to the dash.

You are correct, the other battery cover was not used until the hinged lid came out though and they are a different dimension, the tractor must not have plowed much or at least one of the axles would have broke, I believe if you take them apart they are probably cracked, one just broke on a tractor close to me last year and it had been cracked a long time before finally breaking off, so do not stress it.

Lee;
Are you located near Lima, Ohio?
I think I owned that tractor back in the 70's.
I lived in Elida, Ohio. I believe the serial # I had was 5106.

I may be wrong because it has been a long time.
Jim

You are right about the grill on the 9N they lasted to 1940 sometime in the middle. I think the 1941N had a steel grill with a solid middle rib but bars were vertical. the transmission cover is right and you should have an aluminum dash and snap in cover on the top of hood. There was some kind of bracket that holds the battery down that your front dash had some holes on each lower side for threaded bolts to go through with a stamped steel bracket behind the dash holds battery down.
