this is my first winter playing with "my toy". to avoid problems i did p. m. work in november (plugs, points, cond. rotor, cap and all is clean, bright & tight). with this board i found i had a coil & starter problem. it was working fine until this morning. plugs are wet & black. also noticed 2 things 1-gas is leaking from the bottom of carb (not the drain but the hole?? next to it.) and it looks like the exhaust gasket is bad by the #4 plug (black soot on side of engine).

brought the plugs in for a warming/cleaning. before installing, check for spark. seems good. installed plugs and removed breather from carb. some gas came out. tried to start. it would run about 5 seconds then die. this happened 4 times. checked plugs, wet & black. brought them back in for warming/cleaning. also brought the gas line into house which included an inline napa gas filter (i had bad gas cans). reinstalled all but this time i gave a shot of either but had same results.

ive checked the past posts and archives but still can't figure it out. any ideas???

thanks and ho-ho-ho to all

Thanks stack. Got it started w/valve closed & it died as expected. tapped on carb & opened valve. started w/o problem. I will do a carb check/rebuild in the morning.

Claus-according to the fo-4 manual, the hole i was trying to describe is the "air horn drain". There is a screw as well but that is not leaking. I will know more in the morning when I take it apart.

Not only does it run, but it quieted the wife as well. Thanks again for your suggestions.
I do appreciate it!!!!! !!!!! !!!!

might be a stuck float. Sounds like you have too much fuel in the mix which fouls the plugs. Try this: shut of the fuel valve and try to start it. If it eventually runs until it's out of fuel in the carb, open and close the valve to fill the carb, restart and open the valve. Tap the carb with something solid but not too heavy. The combination of the vibrations from the running engine and tapping may free the float if that's the problem. If this works, you should dismantle and clean the carb with particular attention to whatever's making that float stick.
good luck

Oh, you mean the rust hole.. There aint no hole where gas is supposed to come out... I would check out this hole business first. Take the carb apart and see if the bottom of the bowl rusted through. You may be able to clean it up and use a little bit of metallized epoxy, I think it is impervious to gas. Then take it from there. Usually, when they run for a few seconds and then quit, it is a fuel problem.
Happy Motoring
