I cleaned up and re-greased the original equipment wheel bearings, and installed new seals purchased from FNH. The wheels went back on the spindles just the same as they were originally, and that metal flange was covered, The FNH seal is a face seal, not a circumferential seal. It seals against the face of that cylindrical surface, not the part that is exposed in the photo. It must be driven all the way in, and not allowed to control how far the wheel goes onto the spindle. The inner tapered roller bearing should do that. Unless the bearing is also different from the original, something is wrong with that picture. The spindle nut should torque up "suddenly", and not with a squishy feel to it. The wheel should spin freely, even with the spindle nut torqued. There should not be any drag from the seal. It is possible that a complete new kit positions the wheel differently, but still locates it with the inner wheel bearing and not the seal. As long as the seal meets the face and keeps the dirt out, this may be OK.
