We used 10W-30 Trop-Artic 40-plus years ago on the farm in Fords and a late A John Deere. I was in my teens and 20s then. Our neighbors and ourselves generally used about the best oils offered. Don't know why everybody thinks the old-times used cheap non-detergents. The tank man or oil jobber back then did a good job of selling their premium oils to farmers. 10W-30 is an excellent winter oil and a good summer oil for acreage duty. Mike-Iowa

craig,

Personally, I would use a straight weight oil. Unless it is extreemly cold WHILE YOU ARE WORKING THE TRACTOR, I would use a 30 w and let it warm up a little longer. Or look a little more for a 20 w detergent oil. Like one of the other responses said, oil is a lot better now than when Ford made the tractor. Don't waste your time with non detergent oil.

Don't know why you are looking for non-detergent oil for your N. When it was new only the the unwise owners used non-detergent, it was because it was cheaper, hence in many cases likely a false economy. Ford said 90+ SAE 30; 32 to 90+ SAE 2O; +10 to +30 2OW; -10 to +10 10W. Ford said for -10 to -65 use SAE 10 or 10W, fill to full mark on stick and dilute with one pint of kerosene remark stick and maintain this level. Use the oil of your choice but change it often and keep it clean.

There have been dozens of posts on oils and lubricants on this and other boards at YT. Check the archives. BUT, in my humble opinion, and I'll probably get cursed for it, I don't think it matters much which oil you use. Choose one with a viscosity rating that fits the temperature you are operating in, and change it when you are supposed to. Oils now are a lot better than when your tractor was manufactured.
