Jubilee 12v Generator causing problem?

I have a 53 Jubilee that runs rough, cuts out and occasionally backfires. It was already converted to 12 v when I purchased it two years ago, and has a 12v generator (and regulator) and not an alternator. Ammeter shows it is charging the battery and the lights are constant with no "flickering". Last night while hooking up my blade to push snow, I noticed a flickering light reflecting off the side of the block behind the generator. With a mirror I was able see sparking inside the generator at the back center mostly, but other sparks also coming from the same general area inside the generator. Can this be the cause of my rough running engine or is it normal to be able to see sparks inside the generator? The tractor has fairly new points, plugs, condenser, etc., doesn't seem to be a fuel/carburetor related problem and has run well in the past. I am electrically challenged, so any "troubleshooting" advice would be welcome.

Clark..... ....your generator (and all electrical motors) brushes "sparkle". This does NOT mean that your brushes are gettin' worn and could be time to replace 'em $5 cheap. Ya only find out if'n ya dissasemble yer generator. Could find other things wrong too, like bad bearings, armature rubbing field windings. Inspection is the only way to be certain.

BTW, most generators have a sheetmetal shield over the brushes so the sparkies don't accidently flash any leakin' gasoline, ya might wanna check'er out.

Cuttin' out and ruff runnin' can be caused by lotta things, loose connections, bad sparkies, watter in gas, bad sparkie wires. Use only old fashioned coppercore sparky wire NOT new modern anti-radiostatic carbon core wire. Yer gonna haffta trouble shoot'er better yerself..... ..Dell
