Well there was the Funk option. The first ones used Ford's flathead 90 hp six, then there was the V8 Funk, using a 100 hp flathead. These were dealer installed options, the parts being supplied by the now defunct Funk Aircraft company of Coffeyville Kansas. Check out the Smith's 8N Ford tractor page, then check the Funk heading.

They did put the V-8 in a tractor. It was a 1937? prototype. It was black with a tricycle front end, big rear tires, lots of truck parts. The hood was like a truck, with fold up hinged sides. Henry thought it would be too expensive to produce and sell, so he went with the more economical N that the farmers in 1939 could afford. This prototype is still around today (I think 3 were built). You see it in many of the finer books on Ford tractors. Philip.

Mine was a 51 Ford Hard Top V8. I bought it when I was 17yrs old and had it until I joined the Navy at 19 in 1965. I sold it in 1967 while on leave ($50). The engine was blown when I bought it ($50) and I probably blowed at least 2 engine while I had it. Seems like the block would crack from the valve seat across and down into the cylinder. But, in the early 60s, V8 flatheads were a "dime a dozen"....Ray

P.S. I live in Winchester, Ky.

too much hp for the gearbox? too much repair, too much service time, too much cost to engineer the new drive? put it out of the afFORDability range? planning the NAA at that time? who knows i don't
