I set out Saturday to cut down a 50' dead hickory, about 2 1/2 feet diameter at the bottom, on a back corner of my property. Decided I need the firewood and anyway it was just a matter of time before it fell on my neighbors fence. To get to it, I have to cross a shallow creek (ditch) that drains my large pond. I've been through there before with a tractor but not when it had running water. I had the scoop on the back of the MF 245 and when the rear wheels went down in the mud, the scoop hit bottom on the bank and left the rear wheels hanging. Dumb, dumb, dumb. Had to walk back to the barn and get the 8N and a chain. But I couldn't budge it with the chain, so I backed up to the scoop and hooked up the N's lift arms to the rear set of lift pins on the scoop. It was impressive to see the N's hydraulics lift the rear end of that Massey. Then I was able to get it out far enough to take the scoop off and then the Massey came out with no problem (after kicking the rear end into both-wheel drive). But man, what a mess...mud all over everything. Anyway, got the tree down and cut up, now got to figure out how to get the wood out back over the creek. Live and learn, cuss and laugh.

A trick I often have used to cross small creeks and wet spots while hauling wood is to pile the tops / branches in the creek to form a sort of bridge over the soft area and to bring the area higher. The water can still get through and the branches are fairly easy to get out of the way when you are done hauling.

Heavy Winch might work. Anchor it on the Hickory tree stump.
