Hi to all

I have a problem with my 8n back firing throught the carb. I have installed new wires, plugs, cab, rotor, points, exhaust manifold, battery and rebuilt the carb in my effort to fix this problem. I am contemplating whether or not to buy a new carb but this is by far the most expensive problem that I have had yet because of all of the items that I replaced that were not the culprit. Please help...

Backfiring is caused by one of two things. Timing is off..... .....or the mixture is too lean (an air leak is a possiblility in the intake).

make sure you have the little clip in the top of the distributor shaft, and double check the timing and point setting, too.

Alan;
Believe Dell. IT IS NOT YOUR CARB!
You either have a valve stuck open or when you worked on the distributor and wire you got it out of time.

Allan..... ....its NOT yer carb

When you report you changed your "wires" and then complain about "backfiring", why do I suspect that there just might be a cause/effect relationship?

Check your firing order, 1,2,4,3 CCW. You do understand that CCW means Counter Clock Wize, don't you? ..... .....respectfully, Dell

Dell, thanks for the comment. But I change the wires, points, cap, rotor .... in an attempt to correct the problem.

Allan..... ....If'n I understand you correctly, you're saying that you changed your sparkplug wires "AFTER" the backfiring thru the carb started, is that correct?

Backfiring thru the carb can only happen if one of your intake valves is hung open. Do a compression check.

Backfiring thru the exhaust can becaused by rich mixure and hot exhaust valve, lean mixture, leaky manifold gasket, leaky carb shaft seal, incorrect ignition timing including mis-wired sparkies, hung exhust valve. Do a compression check.

If'n ya suspect a hung valve you'll need to remove the valve spring covers behind your intake manifold and watch while you crank yer engine over. Sometimes it obvious, sometimes they're sticky and can fool ya, watch'em close. May even haffta hand crank'er. Remove yer sparkies to make turning eazy..... .....Dell

Allen,

I would do a compression check - dry then 'wet' (a little engine oil or MMO) and write down the results.
This will help determine if a valve may be stuck or if you have other internal engine problems. It sounds like a timing issue.
Post the results here and someone will be better able to help pinpoint the problem.
