I recently bought what is supposed to be a '41 9N. The serial # on the engine block says 9N166041. According to what I have read this # is too high to be a 9N. It also has what looks to be 2N grill. It has electric start and everything else seems to be 9Nish. Any thoughts?

Thanks

Motor good. They are sleeveless. Did you overhaul and rebore it or find larger diameter pistons? Bob

Bob,

I've done it both ways, depending on wear. I haven't been inside the engine of the one in the picture...yet. It is a working tractor. I have a total of nine Cubs. Five are restored and three are works in progress. One is the world's ugliest Cub, and I'm proud of it.

According to the serial number that's a late 1944 2N (assuming that the engine is original).

I thought it was that too, but what about the # having 9N at the beginning? It also has electric start.

Jeff,

"but what about the # having 9N at the beginning? It also has electric start."

All 9N/2N tractor's serial numbers begin with 9N.

Most 2N's came with electric start except in the first year - and most were converted after the war ended.

N - joy.

Engines can be swaped easily and that is where the serial# is, in 1941 up until the next to last month or so of production of that year had a 1 piece cast alluminum dash and battery tray, smooth side panels, non pressurized radiator and chrome around the guages and knobs, serial# 166041 should have a thin steel dash and battery tray, exsposed bolts to hold the lower side panel on to the front axle support, pressurized radiator and black around the guages radiator cap and hinged hood knob.

Thanks for the info Scott! My 9N has an aluminum dash, non-pressurized radiator, a hinged battery/gas door on top, but exposed bolts that hold on the side panels to the front axle support. Mine also has the mounting bracket ont the left side for a Ferguson sickle-bar mower (Is that rare?) Thanks!

Sounds like the front end except the radiator goes with the engine.
