'48-8N steering box lube?

My 8N's steering system is the older design (prior to #216989). The manual says it gets filled with SAE 90 gear oil. I discovered that the original filler hole plug has been replaced with an adapter and zerk grease fitting. The steering gear is pretty much filled with grease. Anyone have an opinion as to whether this is OK? The steering works fine but I'm in the middle of restoring the tractor and now would be the time to replace the grease with oil, if necessary. It's a pain though and I don't want to have to do it without a good reason.

Thanks again for the input folks. I did pull the sector shafts and can verify that good looking grease is everywhere. By the way, I couldn't find a source for the felt dust seals that go between the sector shaft housing and the pitman arm. Made some though. They were made from glued up layers of felt from an old cowboy hat. We don't wear a lot of cowboy hats here in Vermont so it seemed OK.

I would pull the Zerk fitting and add some heavy oil just to be sure the grease isn't too dry.

I don't know what's in my new 9N steering box yet, but I do know that whenever I disassemble a drill or grinder gearcase, the grease is usually packed behind the gears and pretty much dried out from age. I would at least check the condition of any grease in the box to see how fresh it is and if it's clinging to the gears. That may mean opening the box. I have been using marine grease in some slow speed applications. It's miserable to use because it sticks to everything like honey and pulls out 6-8" before separating from itself.

Slowpoke..... .....the 9N steering gearbox is also the tranny top. 9N/2N's steering gears are "splash lubed" from the spinning tranny gears. Just keep yer tranny full (5 gals). ..... ....Dell

Del... Thanks for reminding me of the 9N steering box location. I think I may have too many tractors now: I was thinking of the Case VAC with the box under the radiator. But I seem to remember that the 9N is quite loose at the sector arms. Maybe nobody checked the oil level in the last 20 or 30 years. I bought the tractor from a friend who had to sell his country property and move to the city. I don't know what maintenance it had in the past and I've only done a few minor repairs so far.

Whooly..... ....an acknowledged problem with both 8N steering gearboxes is lack of lubrication to the upper box bearing causing wear and sloppy steering. Appearently, later model tractors use greese in their steering gearboxes. Zane advocates using greese in 8N steering gearboxes. He knows what he is talking about.

Myself, I'm not so sure, 'cuz once the greese gets squeezed out from between the sector gears, then what? I'm using 140wt outboard motorboat lower unit HD oil in my late 8N steering gearbox that I use a customized zerk fitting bolt to fill the gearbox with.

Bottom line, if'n yer sure its filled with greese, leaveitt..... .....Dell

Thanks Dell - I've often read your comments and value your opinion. We're thinking along the same lines so I'll leave well enough alone. Sure am glad I don't have to flush and refill.

My 8N's early style steering is filled with grease also and works fine.

Don't forget to give it a squirt or two once in a while.

N - joy.
