I’m new to this board and the N series. I think I did ok. I gave $2600 for the tractor, bush hog, scraper blade, plow and hay wagon.

I drove it home (11 mi.) with no problem. Turned it off and tried to restart it and it flooded out. The guy told me that it flooded easy and if I set the throttle on the second notch and tapped the starter, it will fire up. That works but I’m hopping that some of you savvy tractor guys could advise me.

Any online shop manuals?
How can I tell what year it was built? Also, anybody moved round bails of hay with one?

Be sure to do the research as Dell suggested. Don8NAZ has some outstanding illustrated info on carb and gov overhaul with step by step instructions. Super guys on this forum for a newcomer with lots of questions as I too have found out since I started coming here!!!

Thanks for the responses!

It really seems like a good old tractor. It starts (now that I know the secret) and runs good, no smoke knocks etc.

There is one little thing. The lift don’t seem to want to lift much anymore.

I posted a new post "9N lift trouble" and if any of yall have some encouraging words, I need them.

I have to admit, I'm thinking of asking the seller to bye it back. He guaranteed it would lift a roll of hay, and he is a good guy. The little 9N grow on you pretty quick, but I have hungry cows and can't afford to keep it around if I can't feed with it.

If the seller don’t bye it back, about how much do you think I could get out of it fast?

What part of the country are you in? Prices tend to be somewhat regional.

Welcome Larry. Dell mentioned the fo-4 manual and ??? mentioned the operators manual. Those ared two very good informative manuals. They also have them on CD ROM at CDMANUALS.NET. Tune-Up/Rebuild etc... This forum is probably the best contact point for questions. Very helpful knowledgable folks... sometimes like to puff their chest out, but mainly good folks. Oh, if you have a local Ford/New Holland dealer, you can get the manuals there.

You tell what year it is by the serial number. However, the serial number is stamped on the engine block and sometimes engines get replaced. Also, the number was stamped by hand and sometimes it didn't get struck very hard making the number hard to read.

So, here's a site to help you figure out the age of your tractor. Don't be surprised to find out it's a 2N (most 2N owners think they have a 9N).

... 11 miles at 6 mph or so in a 9's third gear, so it took you a couple of hours right?

Welcome to our world!

You didn't mention bale size.As stated the big bales are not possible but I move the small ones#500+- with my 39 9N and stack them with my 52 8N /Wagner loader (I use some mo-made forks attached to the bucket) The archives has info about stoneboats that one guy uses to move the large ones. The 3pt spike I bought and had to change thepins to cat 1.Otherwise you did well.Get the operators manual/the Intertec service manual(latest edition has the parts manual in the back which helps when taking apart or reassembling :) Jim

...cuz 9n's/2n's do not have position control.
This will solve that problem.
Search the archive for the testimonials.
I've got one, works great.
Welcome to the forum.

Larry,
Sounds like you did OK, especially with all of the implements. You are gonna like working with the N's if you have never done it before. Keep in mind that these are 50+ year old machines and on occasion they take some tinkering. However they are also very bullet proof as their 50+ year lifespan proves and they are very simple to work on.

I heartily agree with Dell on the Fo-4 manual. If you have never worked on tractors similar to these then you might also take a look at the "videos" link at the top of the main page of this forum. The tune up video goes into detail on the 9N and especially the front mount distributor (remember, that distributor is meant to be removed before you work on it!).

And of course this forum provides a great place for information.

Congrats and Welcome!
MikeC

Larry..... ....welcome, congrats on your new N-Tractor.
On the left side of this page is a sideboard called "Research & Info". It has a "Serial Numbers" listing, click and brouse.

Unfortunately, most N's can't lift a roundbale on a stinger spear. While their hydraulics will lift about 1200# if you chain the front end down. Most will start flappin their wheels innna the air at about 750#. Most roundbales I'm familar with weigh about 1000#.

There are tow-behind roundbale movers commonly called "doodle-bugs" that clamp over roundbales, you might checkout.

There are NO ONLINE N-Manuals. Recommend the I&T FO-4 manual. Readily available at sponsors of this find N-Board, most tractor parts emporiums, Amazon.com, try www.n-news.com for great archive of implement manuals. Even my local (byte my tongue) John Deere dealer has'em fer sale at their parts rack. $29 cheap, gettcha one and readitt..... ....Dell
